The National Weather Service is warning boaters to be alert after record rainfall and melting snow has sent rivers surging in Interior Alaska.

The weather service says water is rising rapidly in the Chena, Salcha and Goodpaster rivers and could cause minor flooding this weekend.  The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that a flood advisory is in effect through Monday, when rivers are expected to crest.

More than a half-inch of rain was recorded in Fairbanks on Friday, a record for the date, and more rain was expected Saturday night. More than an inch was recorded in areas southeast of Fairbanks.

Water flow may increase rapidly and could surge over the banks in areas. Boaters are advised to be on the lookout for an increase in floating logs and other hazards.
